4340 Forged Bar Characteristics
AISI 4340 steel is one kind of nickel chromium molybdenum, low alloy steel known for its toughness and strength in relatively large sections. 4340 alloy steel is generally supplied hardened and tempered in the tensile range of 135KSI – 160KSI. Pre hardened and tempered AISI 4340 steel can be surface hardened by flame or induction hardening and by nitriding. AISI 4340 steel has good shock and impact resistance as well as wear and abrasion resistance in the hardened condition. ASTM 4340 material is often utilized where other alloy steels do not have the hardenability to give the strength required. For highly stressed parts it is excellent choice. Our AISI 4340 alloy steel bars can also be machined by all customary methods.

AISI 4340 is a nickel chromium molybdenum low alloy steel known for its toughness and strength in relatively large sections. It’s generally supplied hardened and tempered in the 135-160 ksi tensile range, and can be further surface hardened by flame hardening, induction hardening, or nitriding. 4340 has good shock and impact resistance along with wear and abrasion resistance once hardened, and is often chosen for highly stressed parts where other alloy steels lack the hardenability to deliver the needed strength. Both are chromium-molybdenum alloy steels, but 4340 adds nickel, which 4140 doesn’t have. That nickel gives 4340 deeper hardenability and better toughness in thick sections, making it the stronger choice for large, highly stressed parts. 4140 runs lower in alloy content and is typically used where high strength is needed but section size and impact toughness demands aren’t as extreme.
