Carbon Steel Characteristics
Carbon steel is an iron-carbon alloy that contains up to 2.1 percent carbon. Essential to any carbon steel is carbon and manganese. As the carbon content of the steel is increased, higher hardness and strength can be attained.
There are three types of carbon steel:
- Low carbon steel forging: less than .25 percent carbon
- Medium carbon steel forging: between .25 and .6 percent carbon
- High carbon steel forging: .6 to 1.25 percent carbon
