Hot rolling is completed in a mill and involves rolling the steel at a high temperature – typically over 1700°F – which is above the steel’s recrystallization temperature. At this temperature, steel can be easily shaped, formed and even made in much larger sizes. Without the added steps of cold rolling, hot rolled steel will shrink slightly when cooled giving the manufacturer less control of the final size and shape of the finished product. However, it is a more economical choice than cold rolled steel.
Hot rolled steel bars are used in the welding and construction industries to make products like railroad tracks and I-beams. It is ideal for use in applications where precise shapes and tolerances are not required.
Additional cooling and reheating steps give cold rolled steel bar a very tight tolerance diameter. It is essentially hot rolled steel that has had further processing and therefore comes at a slightly higher price tag. After heating, cold-rolled steel is processed further in cold reduction mills where the material is cooled to room temperature followed by annealing and/or tempers rolling.
Cold rolled bar is recommended for projects where tolerances, surface conditions, and straightness are major factors. Examples include oil and water well gears and shafting.
As a rolled bar distributor, We carry rolled steel bar in diameters ranging from 1 to 9.5 inches, any larger and rolled bar begins to lose useful mechanical properties.
