 Steel Heat Treating Services

Cromdane Steel provides steel heat treating services through our heat treat partners as part of a fully integrated supply and processing program out of Houston, Texas. For engineers and procurement managers sourcing certified alloy bar and forgings, heat treating is often the difference between a part that passes inspection and one that doesn't.

Through our value-added services, we handle the material and processing, so you don't have to coordinate between a steel distributor and a separate heat treater to meet your mechanical property targets.

Heat Treating 101

Heat treating is a controlled thermal process that alters the mechanical properties of steel. By heating and cooling metal at specific rates, engineers can achieve targeted hardness, tensile strength, yield strength, and toughness in the finished product.

The process matters because raw steel, even from the correct alloy grade, rarely meets the mechanical requirements of demanding applications in its mill-delivered condition. Our steel heat treating services serve specific engineering purposes, and each method requires precise control of temperature, time, and cooling rate to produce repeatable results.

Heat Treating Processes We Offer

Not every application calls for the same thermal process, and specifying the wrong one can produce parts that fail certification or underperform in service. We heat treat steel using various methods, and we help you determine which process your material and application require.

Quench and Temper

Quenching and tempering produces high-strength, high-toughness alloy steel with defined hardness. The steel is austenitized at an elevated temperature, rapidly quenched to form martensite, and tempered to reduce brittleness. This process is standard for alloy grades like 4140, 4340, and 8620 and is commonly specified in oil and gas, power generation, and mining applications where mechanical property minimums must be documented and certified.

Annealing

Annealing softens steel and relieves internal stress accumulated from prior processing. Full annealing and process annealing serve different metallurgical purposes, but both improve machinability and reduce the risk of distortion during subsequent machining or fabrication.

Normalizing

Normalizing refines grain structure and produces more uniform mechanical properties throughout the cross section of the bar or forging. Engineers frequently specify it for alloy forgings going into pressure vessels and structural applications.

Stress Relieving

Stress relieving removes residual stress from machining, welding, or forming operations without significantly changing the steel's hardness or strength. It reduces dimensional instability in precision-machined components.

Materials We Heat Treat

Our heat treating program covers the alloy grades we stock and supply, including:

  • 4130 and 4140 chromium-molybdenum alloy bar and forgings
  • 4340 nickel-chromium-molybdenum alloy bar
  • 8620 nickel-chromium-molybdenum low-alloy case hardening grades
  • Tool steels specified for die and tooling applications
  • Super alloys for high-temperature power generation components

The alloy chemistry of the steel determines how it responds to heat treatment. Selection of the wrong grade, even one close in composition, can result in inadequate hardenability, poor through-hardening, or mechanical properties that fall short of your specification. Because we supply the steel we heat treat, we know the exact chemistry of the material entering the furnace. That's not a small thing in regulated industries.

Industries and Applications

The industries that consume the most heat-treated alloy steel are also the ones with the least tolerance for material or processing failures. We structure our certifications, alloy expertise, and single-source supply program specifically for the demands of oil and gas, power generation, mining, and machining and fabrication industries.

Oil and Gas

Cromdane's API Q1 certification directly qualifies our heat treating program for upstream oil and gas applications. Valve bodies, flanges, pressure-containing components, and downhole tooling frequently require quench-and-tempered alloy steel certified to API 6A or to customer-specific mechanical requirements. We stock and supply the alloy grades, coordinate the heat treating, and provide full material certifications, reducing your vendor count and the documentation burden that comes with sourcing from multiple suppliers.

Power Generation

We supply and process alloy and super alloy steel for coal, gas, hydro, geothermal, and nuclear power generation. High-temperature and high-stress applications in power generation demand tight control over mechanical properties and microstructure. Our ISO 9001:2015 certification governs our quality management system across supply and processing.

Mining

Mining equipment and components operate under extreme impact and abrasion conditions. Quench-and-tempered alloy bar specified to hardness minimums is standard for mining applications, and we supply grades commonly used in ground-engaging tools, structural components, and mechanical drive systems.

Machining and Fabrication

We work regularly with machining and fabrication shops that prefer to source heat-treated alloy bar ready for final machining. Combining our saw cutting and rough machining capabilities with heat treating means you receive material at the specified hardness, cut to length, and ready to run from a single source.

Why Source Steel and Heat Treating Through Cromdane?

Most distributors can tell you what grade to buy. What we do that's different: We help you select the alloy chemistry that produces the mechanical properties you need after heat treatment.

Hardenability varies significantly across alloy families, and it varies even within a grade depending on the chemistry ranges allowed by the specification. A 4140 bar at the low end of the molybdenum range may not through-harden the same way as one at the high end, and for large cross-section forgings or bar, that difference shows up in your certification results.

When you source the steel through Cromdane and run it through our heat treating program, we trace the chemistry of the specific alloy you're buying and evaluate its expected heat treat response, flagging hardenability concerns before the material goes into the furnace. That capability stems from 50 years of supplying alloy steel and the technical depth that comes with it.

Our API Q1 and ISO 9001:2015 certifications mean the documentation your quality team needs comes from a single certified source, in the format your customers and auditors expect.

Frequently Asked Questions

For oil and gas applications, especially those governed by API 6A or NACE MR0175/ISO 15156, suppliers should hold API Q1 certification, which demonstrates a quality management system that meets the API's requirements for manufacturing and processing organizations. ISO 9001:2015 certification is a baseline expectation across most regulated industries.

Through-hardening heats the entire cross section of the steel and quenches it to produce uniform hardness throughout the part. Case hardening, by contrast, hardens only a thin surface layer while leaving the core relatively soft and tough. Through-hardening is specified when a part needs consistent mechanical properties across its full cross section, common in forgings, pressure-containing components, and structural parts. Case hardening is specified when a part needs a hard, wear-resistant surface with a tough core, such as in gears, cams, and bearing surfaces. The correct process depends on the alloy, the part geometry, and the application's mechanical demands.

Larger cross sections are harder to through-harden uniformly because the quench medium can only cool the surface so quickly. The core cools more slowly and may not reach the same hardness as the surface. This is the hardenability problem, and it's why the alloy grade matters as much as the heat treat process. Higher-alloy grades like 4340 have significantly greater hardenability than lower-alloy grades like 1045, allowing them to achieve consistent hardness over much larger cross sections. For critical applications, it's worth reviewing the expected hardness gradient across the cross section before specifying the alloy and process, particularly for bar stock over 4 inches in diameter or forgings with thick sections.r
