Hot rolling is completed at the mill and involves processing steel at temperatures above 1,700°F, well above the material's recrystallization point. At this temperature, steel can be shaped and formed far more easily, and often produced in larger sizes than cold rolling allows. Because there's no additional cold working step, the hot-rolled bar will shrink slightly as it cools, giving manufacturers somewhat less control over final dimensions than cold-rolled products. That tradeoff is exactly why a hot rolled steel bar remains one of the most economical options available, making it a practical choice whenever tight tolerances aren't required.

Grades of Hot Rolled Steel Bar We Stock

Cromdane Steel carries an extensive inventory of hot rolled steel bar and hot rolled steel round bar across multiple grade families, so customers can source the exact hot rolled bar they need without waiting on a mill run. Diameters typically range from 1 to 9.5 inches, available in both round bar and square bar profiles. Because we purchase directly from North American mills, we're able to offer hot rolled round bars with material certifications and full traceability on every shipment. See our complete list of stocked grades on our materials page.

Alloy, Carbon & Stainless Hot Rolled Bar Grades

Each grade family serves a different purpose. Carbon steel grades like 1018, 1026, and 1045 are among the most widely stocked hot rolled bar options, offering a cost-effective, versatile choice for general fabrication and structural work. We also stock A105 hot rolled bar, produced to meet the chemical and mechanical requirements of ASTM A105, for customers machining piping components such as flanges and fittings.

Alloy steel grades such as 4130, 4140, 4340, and 4330 incorporate additional elements like chromium, nickel, or molybdenum to improve strength, hardenability, or wear resistance, and are readily available as hot rolled steel round bars in a wide range of diameters. Stainless grades, including 304 and 316/316L, are also stocked as hot rolled steel bars for applications where corrosion resistance is the priority.

As a trusted hot rolled steel bar supplier, Cromdane Steel helps customers match the right grade of hot rolled bar to their application, drawing on decades of experience sourcing and stocking material for a wide range of industries. Whether you need a hot rolled round bar in a common carbon grade or a specialty alloy, our team can help you find it in stock and ready to ship.

Hot Rolled vs. Cold Rolled Steel Bar: What's the Difference?

The core difference between hot rolled steel bar and cold rolled steel bar comes down to how each is processed. The hot rolled bar is shaped above the steel's recrystallization temperature, allowing for faster processing and larger sizes, but resulting in a rougher surface finish and looser dimensional tolerances. Cold rolled bars, by contrast, are processed at or near room temperature after an initial hot rolling stage, producing tighter tolerances, a smoother finish, and improved mechanical properties, at a higher cost.

Hot rolled bar is generally the better choice when precise shapes and finishes aren't required and cost efficiency matters most, while hot rolled steel round bar and flat profiles remain a go-to option for structural and general fabrication work.
